2020 was an interesting year to say the least! So much time at home, not going out to restaurants, not traveling, spending more time on the computer. I’m lucky that I live with a park with wonderful walking and biking paths, trees, green grass right behind my house. There are roadrunners running across the path, birds chirping, even sometimes a hawk taking a drink at our fountain. Sitting outside, enjoying the sounds of the birds, I found reading each day took me on adventures even as never left home.
Here are four of my favorites I’ve read in 2020.
Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
The author paints a beautiful picture of the coastal marshes of North Carolina’s Outer Banks in the book that is at once a murder mystery, a coming-of-age narrative and a celebration of nature. I found it difficult to put the book down as I followed Kya’s heartbreaking story of learning to trust human connections, intertwined with a murder mystery with fascinating characters. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING PHENOMENON More than 7 million copies sold worldwide A Reese Witherspoon x Hello Sunshine Book Club Pick A Business Insider Defining Book of the Decade "I can't even express how much I love this book! All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr
A beautiful story about a blind French girl and a German boy whose paths collide in occupied France as both try to survive the devastation of World War II. Following Marie-Laure as she survives in a town occupied by the Germans and Werner’s journey from an orphanage to becoming a German soldier and how their lives intersect during the bombing of Saint-Malo. I could see the snails on the beaches and the armies on the move. It was hard to put the book down. Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate
This book is based on one of America’s most notorious real-life scandals—in which Georgia Tann, director of a Memphis-based adoption organization, kidnapped and sold poor children to wealthy families all over the country. I was both enraged at times at the cruelty, then moved to tears by the love of family and fierce protectiveness of Rill Foss. This is a powerful tale of family, of sisters, of secrets kept and secrets shared that crosses generations. THE BLOCKBUSTER HIT—Over two million copies sold! Nighthawk by Clive Cussler and Graham Brown
I love the action-packed thrillers and the characters in Clive Cussler’s books. There is always a race to save the world and new technology and adventures for Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala. This is another fun-filler adventure that takes you from the Galapagos Islands to the jungles of South America as they race to locate the most advanced aircraft ever designed that vanishes over the South Pacific.
